Although this exhibition is no longer on display at the museum, we have made it available online for curious readers. Through 30 photographs taken by the American military, it allows visitors to relive this historical moment by following the footsteps of the first liberators, from the beach to Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. Summer 1944. The LSTs, special 100-meter-long flat-bottomed ships designed to cross oceans and run aground directly on a beach with no port infrastructure, lined up side by side before the tide receded. This scene is located opposite the access gap to route no. 3. The dunes before the war The dunes of La Madeleine still bear the deep scars of the Second World War. While the red-roofed “Chalet Lepelletier” seems to be the only reminder of the past, numerous wooden and stone vacation homes were already in existence in the early 20th century. A postcard from the 1930s shows these cottages, some of which no longer exist. One of them was occupied by German lookouts from 1940 onwards, before being demolished in 1943 during the construction of the WN 5 strongpoint by German forces. Scene of a summer's day in the 1920s. An essential landmark On Tuesday June 6, 1944 at around 8:30 a. m. , soldiers from the 8ᵉ Infantry Regiment of the 4ᵉ American Division took strongpoint WN 5 at Utah Beach, near the house with the red roof. Supported by DD amphibious tanks from the 70ᵗʰ Tank Battalion, they advance despite delays caused by the loss of explosives equipment intended to breach the anti-tank wall. While enemy fire continues from the heights, the troops manage to advance through the swamp towards the American paratroopers. Engineering units clear a safe passage, enabling infantry and vehicles to move towards the Madeleine chapel, then strategic road no. 2. One section also advanced towards the village of Pouppeville, successfully bypassing the German defenses and suffering few casualties. A soldier from the 4th Infantry Division stands guard in his foxhole dug at the foot of the anti-tank wall. The “Poilu” statue was removed and hidden just before the arrival of the Germans in June 1940. With the help of a US Army engineering unit, it was put back in place for the national ceremony on July 14, 1944. Bien que cette exposition ne soit plus présentée au musée, nous la laissons accessible en ligne pour les lecteurs curieux. Une carte postale des années 1930 montre ces maisonnettes, dont certaines ont disparu. L’une d’elles fut occupée par des guetteurs allemands à partir de 1940, avant d’être démolie en 1943 lors de la construction du point d’appui WN 5 par les forces allemandes. Scène d’une journée d’été pendant les années 1920. Les hommes sont coiffés de leurs canotiers tandis que les dames, fières dans leurs belles robes longues, se protègent du soleil sous leurs ombrelles. La maison en pierres de taille est visible sur sa face Nord. Un point de repère inncontournable Le mardi 6 juin 1944 vers 8h30, les soldats du 8ᵉ régiment d’infanterie de la 4ᵉ division américaine prennent le point d’appui WN 5 à Utah Beach, près de la maison au toit rouge. Soutenus par des chars amphibies DD du 70ᵗʰ Tank Battalion, ils progressent malgré les retards causés par la perte de matériel d’explosifs destiné à ouvrir une brèche dans le mur antichar. Tandis que les tirs ennemis se poursuivent depuis les hauteurs, les troupes parviennent à avancer à travers le marais vers les parachutistes américains. Les unités du Génie déminent un passage sécurisé, permettant à l’infanterie et aux véhicules de s’engager vers la chapelle de la Madeleine, puis la route stratégique n°2. Une section progresse également vers le village de Pouppeville, contournant les défenses allemandes avec succès et subissant peu de pertes. Un soldat de la 4ème division d’infanterie en faction dans son trou de combat creusé au pied du mur anti-char. Une armée mécanisée en mouvementÀ Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, sous le soleil de l’été 1944, les habitants assistent avec curiosité à l’arrivée massive des troupes américaines. Tandis que la guerre a laissé des traces visibles dans le village, comme les impacts de balles, la vie reprend peu à peu. Les civils découvrent avec étonnement la modernité des véhicules et le langage des soldats libérateurs. Le 10 juin, une colonne de la 9ᵉ division d’infanterie passe par le village en route vers le front, dans l’objectif stratégique d’isoler Cherbourg. Quelques parachutistes de la « Easy Company » posent devant le socle du monument dédié à la Grande Guerre 1914-1918. La statue du « Poilu » a été retirée et cachée juste avant l’arrivée des allemands en juin 1940. Elle sera remise en place avec l’aide d’une unité du Génie de l’armée américaine pour la cérémonie nationale du 14 juillet 1944. Summary Buy your tickets +33 2 33 71 53 35 Sommaire A Rediscovered Historic SiteLocated 4 km southwest of Utah Beach, the Brécourt Manor was the scene of a legendary battle. Archaeological excavations, conducted by Bordeaux Montaigne University in partnership with the Utah Beach Landing Museum and supported by the Ministry of Culture, have made it possible to explore this site. The first excavation campaign took place in 2022 and uncovered remains that help preserve the memory of these events The Brécourt 2022 excavation team in front of the Sainte-Marie-du-Mont war memorial. From Memory to MythOn the morning of June 6, 1944, paratroopers from Company E of the 506th Regiment of the 101st American Airborne Division attacked a German artillery battery targeting Utah Beach. This battle, recounted by several American witnesses, was popularized by Stephen E. Ambrose’s book Band of Brothers (1992) and the eponymous mini-series (2001). Photo dedicated to Charles de Vallavieille by Don Malarkey and Buck Compton, who both took part in the assault on Brécourt Manor. The Evolution of the Historical NarrativeThe struggle, that took place there, remained in the shadows for several decades and was first mentioned in 1948 in La Brèche de Sainte-Marie-du-Mont by François Lemonnier Gruhier. In the 1970s, George Koskimaki gathered the first testimonies from soldiers, which were further reinforced in 1984 by the research of Michel de Vallavieille and his meeting with Richard Winters, the officer who led the assault. A memorial honoring the paratroopers of Company E was inaugurated in 2008, followed in 2012 by the monument dedicated to military leadership. Battle of Brécourt Memorial The monument to leadership, bearing the effigy of Lieutenant Richard D. Winters. A Battle with Diverging NarrativesThe narratives of the battle differ regarding the placement of the German cannons and their caliber (88 mm or 105 mm). The identity of the German unit also remains uncertain: some sources attribute it to the 6th Parachute Regiment, while others suggest the 90th or 191st Artillery Regiment. The American StrategyThe assault was carried out according to the "Fire and Manoeuvre" doctrine: a base of fire covered the advance of two attack groups, led by Winters and Lieutenant Compton. After capturing the first three cannons, a detachment led by Lieutenant Speirs seized the fourth. Lacking ammunition and facing persistent resistance, the soldiers withdrew after destroying the cannons. Belligerent armamentThe American paratroopers were equipped with the semi-automatic M1 Garand rifle, the Thompson submachine gun, and . 30 caliber machine guns. The German unit, whose identity remains uncertain, was armed with K-98 rifles, MP-40 submachine guns, and MG-34 and MG-42 machine guns. These excavations provide new insight into one of the most iconic battles of D-Day, preserving the memory of those who fought there. Archaeological MethodsArchaeology is not only concerned with objects but also with human actions across time and space. An excavation aims to reconstruct an environment and understand its evolution. An object holds value only when placed in its context, defined by its location and the layer of soil in which it was found. These layers, accumulated over time, help establish a relative chronology. Therefore, an excavation involves analyzing these contexts to give meaning to the discovered remains. Research does not end in the field: in the laboratory, objects are cleaned, identified, and cataloged. By cross-referencing this data with field findings, archaeologists can develop interpretations and reconstruct past events. Alexis is digging in a pit. The objects that appeared were shells from 105mm guns. They had not moved since the morning of 6 June 1944 (Brécourt excavation). Des fouilles archéologiques, menées par l’Université Bordeaux Montaigne en partenariat avec le Musée du Débarquement de Utah Beach et soutenues par le Ministère de la Culture, ont permis d’explorer ce site. La première campagne de fouilles a eu lieu en 2022 et a mis au jour des vestiges restituant la mémoire de ces événements. L'équipe de fouille de Brécourt 2022 devant le monument aux morts de Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. De la mémoire vers le mythe Le matin du 6 juin 1944, des parachutistes de la Compagnie E du 506ᵉ régiment de la 101ᵉ Division aéroportée américaine ont attaqué une batterie d’artillerie allemande qui visait Utah Beach. Ce combat, raconté par plusieurs témoins américains, a été popularisé par le livre Band of Brothers de Stephen E. Ambrose (1992) et la mini-série éponyme (2001). Une bataille aux récits divergentsLes récits du combat présentent des différences quant à la disposition des canons allemands et leur calibre (88 mm ou 105 mm). L'identité de l’unité allemande reste également incertaine : certaines sources l’attribuent au 6ᵉ régiment de parachutistes, d’autres au 90ᵉ ou 191ᵉ régiment d’artillerie. La stratégie américaineL’assaut fut mené selon la doctrine du "Fire and Manœuvre" : une base de feu couvrait l’avancée de deux groupes d’attaque, dirigés par Winters et le lieutenant Compton. Après avoir pris les trois premiers canons, un détachement mené par le lieutenant Speirs s’empara du quatrième. Faute de munitions et face à une résistance toujours présente, les soldats se replièrent après avoir détruit les canons. L’armement des belligérantsLes parachutistes américains étaient équipés du fusil semi-automatique M1 Garand, du pistolet-mitrailleur Thompson et de mitrailleuses de calibre . 30. L’unité allemande, mal identifiée, disposait de fusils K-98, de pistolets-mitrailleurs MP-40 et de mitrailleuses MG-34 et MG-42. Ces fouilles apportent un nouvel éclairage sur l’un des affrontements les plus emblématiques du Jour J, prolongeant la mémoire de ceux qui y ont combattu. Les méthodes de l'archéologieL'archéologie ne s'intéresse pas seulement aux objets, mais aux actions humaines dans le temps et l’espace. Une fouille vise à reconstituer un environnement et comprendre son évolution. Un objet n’a de valeur que replacé dans son contexte, défini par son emplacement et la couche de terre dans laquelle il repose. Ces couches, accumulées au fil du temps, permettent d’établir une chronologie relative. Une fouille consiste donc à analyser ces contextes pour donner du sens aux vestiges découverts. Les recherches ne s’arrêtent pas sur le terrain : en laboratoire, les objets sont nettoyés, identifiés et inventoriés. En croisant ces données avec celles du terrain, les archéologues peuvent bâtir des interprétations et reconstituer des événements passés. Alexis fouille une fosse. Les objets qui apparaissent sont des douilles de canons de 105mm. Elles n'ont pas bougé depuis le 6 juin 1944 au matin (fouilles de Brécourt). Exemple d’interprétation : une douille retrouvéeSi une douille de calibre 30-court est trouvée dans une tranchée avec d’autres vestiges des années 1940, il est probable qu’elle ait été tirée le 6 juin 1944 et retrouvée près de son point d’impact. En revanche, si elle est découverte dans une couche plus récente, elle a été déplacée. Un objet hors de son contexte d’origine perd donc une grande partie de son intérêt archéologique. A l'automne 2022, Marie fouille la terre ayant comblé une des douilles trouvées en mai. C'est une des étapes dans la longue et complexe étude des objets trouvés en fouille (fouilles de Brécourt).
